Class Description
Program Overview
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) for Heathcare Providers program is to equip responders with the skills to quickly recognize cardiac arrest, provide high-quality CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to improve patient outcomes. This training also addresses other life-threatening emergencies that can lead to cardiac arrest if not promptly managed. These include respiratory arrest, drowning, opioid overdose, myocardial infarction, life-threatening bleeding and obstructed airway.
What You Will Learn
Through a mix of immersive simulations and hands-on training, you will learn:
Describe the Cardiac Arrest Chain of Survival and how each link contributes to improving survival from cardiac arrest.
Apply teamwork skills, prioritizing interprofessional teamwork and communication during cardiac emergencies through simulated multiple-responder scenarios.
Integrate feedback on performance in CPR technique, emphasizing continuous improvement in skills, knowledge retention and team building.
Articulate the importance of high-quality CPR and its impacts on survival.
Demonstrate high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants, including chest compressions and ventilations with a barrier device.
Explain the purpose of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and how it can improve survival from cardiac arrest.
Demonstrate how to effectively use an AED in conjunction with CPR for adults, children and infants.
Describe identification and management of life-threatening conditions that can lead to cardiac arrest in adults, children and infants.
Examine the potential differences in basic life support care for adults, children and infants.
Recognize the signs of choking and initial actions needed for adults, children and infants.
Perform appropriate techniques to relieve choking in adults, children and infants.
Course Format: Blended Learning

Always check with your employer for certification requirements.
Course Length
The online portion can range from 30 minutes to 3 hours long depending on technology limitations and familiarity with the skills. Participants will receive a training link in an email after they booked a class.
Participants are required to complete the online session, including successful completion of an online final exam with a score of at least 84 percent prior to attending the in-person session.
The in-person skills session is about 3 to 4 hours in length depending on the size and needs of the class.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I provide proof of completion if the FA/CPR/AED online course does not produce a “proceed to skill session” certificate?
There are two ways to show proof:
1) Students are welcome to simply print or show an electronic copy of the email they receive stating they have completed the online coursework.
2) If a student can’t provide proof of completion, we can provide the option for them to take the written test.
